June

June Cleaver, the deferential "Leave it to Beaver" television housewife prepared meals, cleaned house, and otherwise served her family for 234 episodes. Her character epitomizes the difficult and delicate tasks many women still perform in the service of an outdated model.

JUNE, 2009, installation view
An 8ft.x10ft. carpet made of eggshells depicts the actress Barbara Billingsley's publicity photograph as June Cleaver. The subject of this installation is the shattering of a myth. Accompanied by a vacuum cleaner, June is at once an homage and a good-riddance to the idealized American family and the difficult and delicate tasks many women perform in the service of an impossible and outdated model.

JUNE, 2009, installation process
Television is a medium that both reflects our society and influences it, making June Cleaver's image oddly suited for this project. Following the conclusion of the original 234 Leave it to Beaver episodes in 1963, reruns have aired continuously all over the world.

JUNE, 2009, installation process
Eggshells as part of a sculptural vocabulary are tied to gender politics and the conditioned expectations of women. Quite ironically, the physical undertaking of this project involved laborious tasks uncannily similar to duties in the home.

ABOUT

Through her diverse sculpture, conceptual artist Pamela DeTuncq addresses some of the more compelling zeitgeists of contemporary American culture. After years in the design industry, she now applies her skills to multi-layered sculptural work addressing such disparate themes as teen alienation, gender stereotypes, and the vicissitudes of faith.
She earned her MFA in Visual Arts from the Art Institute of Boston and BA in Graphic Design from the University of Maryland. Her work has been shown nationally, with the Dennos Museum recently adding one of her fiber installations to their permanent collection.
